Changes in immigration regulations: requirements for applying for a study visa or authorization

To obtain an authorization for stay for studies in Spain, there are two possible options:

  • APPLYING FOR A VISA FROM THE COUNTRY OF ORIGIN AT THE SPANISH CONSULATE

The application must be submitted at least two months before the start of classes. There are exceptions to this requirement (consult the internal note). In any case, the assessment of these exceptions (and their validation as such) is exclusively up to the Spanish Consular Office, and the UAB has no influence whatsoever over their consideration.

IMPORTANT: This procedure is the safest, as in the event of a denial, the trip to Spain would not have taken place. It is always more advisable to travel with the certainty of having obtained the stay permit (visa) beforehand.

  • APPLYING FOR AUTHORIZATION FOR STAY FOR STUDIES IN SPAIN

There is also the possibility of applying for authorization for stay for studies within Spanish territory (this option is only valid for nationals of countries exempt from a visa for short stays). The application must be submitted at least two months before the start of classes. There are exceptions to this requirement—please consult this information note. In any case, the assessment of these exceptions (and their validation as such) is exclusively up to the Barcelona Immigration Office, and the UAB has no influence over their consideration.

Likewise, the application must be submitted while there are still two months of legal stay remaining (i.e., within the first month after entering Spain).

This option involves risks that must be assumed by those who choose it, as the granting of the authorization for stay for studies is not guaranteed. The approval of the authorization depends exclusively on the Barcelona Immigration Office, and the UAB has no influence whatsoever over their decision. Therefore, there is a risk of DENIAL after the trip to Spain has already taken place.
