The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) is one of the top 200 universities in Europe, according to the European edition of the Times Higher Education rankings, announced on Thursday 10 March. It is the first university in Spain and is in 70th position, in front of Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), which occupies 80th place; University of Barcelona (UB), in 86th position; the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM), in 160th position; and the University of Navarra (UNAV), in 170th position.

The United Kingdom is the country with the greatest number of universities in the list, with a total of 46, and with Oxford University occupying first place, followed by Cambridge University and the Imperial College of London third.

Germany is the country with the second greatest amount of universities in the ranking, with a total of 36. LMU Munich is the top German university, in 10th position, and almost a third of all German institutions are among the top fifty universities.

This ranking of European universities is the result of a previous classification published in October 2015 by Times Higher Education in which the top 800 institutions from 70 different countries were announced.

The classification took into account several aspects, such as the research conducted by centres, the learning environment, reputation, student/teacher ratio, degrees and PhDs awarded, university funding, research paper citations, and amount of funding for research.
