Molecular Plasticity show combines science, dance and technology
The association La Ciencia en Tu Mundo presents on 28 September at 1pm at the UAB Theatre Molecular Plasticity, an interactive production that fuses science, dance and technology to provide a new understanding of the research work of scientist Inmaculada Yruela, head scientist at the EEAD-CSIC in Zaragoza, on the function of ductile proteins in evolutionary processes and diseases.
Molecular Plasticity is a multisensory experience that seeks to disseminate the paradigm shift in molecular biology that has resulted from the knowledge of ductile proteins, which do not necessarily adopt a structure to perform their function; their role in the processes of development and adaptation of organisms, being key to evolution, and their role in the origin of certain diseases. This scientific topic is also an educational way to show current social challenges and problems such as bullying and school discrimination because these proteins were initially dismissed by the scientific community as being different and irregular.
The public will be able to enjoy free of charge, limited to the capacity of the UAB Theatre, an interactive show that is structured in three acts. In the first act, the classic concepts of structural biology are introduced, demonstrating how the structure of proteins is related to their function. In the second act, ductile proteins, which do not follow a defined structure, are presented, highlighting the paradigm shift that their knowledge has meant for molecular biology. Finally, in the third act, through an interactive game and the collaboration of the audience, different forms of proteins are created using flexible and rigid elements with the aim of inspiring people to see diversity as a strength and not to consider uniqueness as a disadvantage or a defect.
After the play, there will be a debate related with the relevance of ductile proteins, the importance of their diversity and the connection between art and science. Participating in the debate will be Dr. Inmaculada Yruela, the director of the work Roberto Torres, and CREAF researcher and professor at the UAB, Sandra Saura.
