In the event, UJI commercial law professor Maria Victoria Petit, sponsor of the new honorary doctor, spoke on the highlights of Arroyo's extensive academic, research and professional trajectory in both the commercial law and transport areas. She pointed out that Arroyo is a "leading figure in the field who must be studied" and an author key to the development of maritime and transport laws.

Arroyo thanked the university for this opportunity to learn with the words «who dictates the lesson is the first to learn it» and dedicated his acceptance speech to his university pursuit. According to Arroyo, his passion for maritime law "is the result of its international and universal character, in addition to the interest in contributing to a law which was practically orphan of treatment and needed to be equipped with an updated legislation". And he added that: "The relationship with our studies never lets us down because making an effort is always compensating. But all progress must pass through the transmission of knowledge, and teaching is a way to work miracles".

The same event served to award an honorary doctorate to Stefano Zunarelli, transport law professor at the University of Bologna. UJI Rector Eva Alcón stated that "these two internationally renowned academics are the best example for our future PhD graduates and for all of the university community".
