The UABpresents 50 years of UAB experiences

The new "50 anys d'experiències UAB" series published by the Publishing Services includes a set of unique experiences under the guidance of distinguished UAB lecturers.

The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona presented a new book series entitled «50 anys d’experiències UAB» [50 Years of UAB Experiences] on Tuesday 9 October at 7 p.m. at the Casa del Llibre in Barcelona, as part of the events celebrating the university's 50 years.

The books, published by the UAB Publishing Services, include a set of unique experiences under the guidance of distinguished lecturers from the UAB, which in this first half century of existence has become one of the country's leaders in scientific, academic and cultural activities.

Attending the presentation were UAB Rector Margarita Arboix, Vice Rector of Institutional Relations and Culture Carlos Sánchez, who will deliver the opening speech, and the authors of the fours volumes of the series: José Enrique Ruiz-Domènec, Antoni Serra-Ramoneda, Ramon Pascual de Sans and Francisco Rico.

The four authors spoke about their personal experiences as lecturers at the UAB during an exceptional and unique stage of the university's history.

José Enrique Ruiz-Domènec, professor of Medieval History, was director of the Institute of Medieval Studies and is author of Sentir el arte. Lectura de San Bernardoel arte cisterciense de Georges Duby, the text making up his seminar at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities during the 1977/78 academic year.

Antoni Serra Ramoneda, former rector of the UAB, is professor of Business and Economics and was also president of the savings bank Caixa Catalunya. He present Dos temps, dos contextos. El naixement d’una nova universitat and explained how the creation of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona was improvised with very little resources and opposition from the official sector, but with an enormous amount of enthusiasm.

Ramon Pascual de Sans, professor of Physics and President of the Executive Committee at the ALBA Synchrotron, he is the author of La historia del sincrotrón Alba. In this volume he explains how at the beginning of the 1990s, the idea appeared of building a synchrotron light source, a source of X-rays, an essential tool for all fields of science interested in analysing and studying samples at nanometric scales, and a stimulus for all technologies related to particle accelerators. The book details the management of the project, its initial stages, difficulties, start-up and current situation.

Finally, Francisco Rico, professor of Medieval Spanish Literature and member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Language, the Italian Accademia dei Lincei and many other institutions, presented Escritores en la Autónoma. La tertúlia de Letras. During eight years, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the Bellaterra campus had the honour of inviting over thirty of the most famous and valued writers of the time. For author and professor Rico, contemporary liturature must be created and lived, not taught. 

The prices of the books range from 12 to 18 euros. A limited edition set of all four books can be bought for 36 euros. An e-book version can also be bought of each of the books from the website of the UAB Publishing Services.
