The UAB wins 79 medals at the university championships of Catalonia and Spain
The 399 UAB students participating this year in the university championships of Catalonia and Spain have won 79 medals. In the Catalan competition, the UAB ranked second in terms of number of medals, which went to UAB athletes in basketball, rock climbing, fencing, golf, orienteering, and taekwondo. The sports that were most represented and in which most medals were won were swimming and taekwondo.
The UAB ranked second in number of medals won in the Catalan University Championships, with 60 medals and 343 students participating.
The UAB obtained 79 medals, 25 gold, 27 silver and 27 bronze medals, in the Catalan University Championships (CCU) and in the Spanish University Championships (CEU) which took place this 2023/24 academic year.
In the competition held in Catalonia, 343 UAB students (202 men and 141 women) participated and won a total of 60 medals: 20 gold, 20 silver and 20 bronze medals. The UAB ranked second in number of medals, both in individual and in team sports, and was only surpassed by the University of Barcelona. The competitions were held at the Pompeu Fabra University and next year they will be held at the Rovira i Virgili University.
Swimming and taekwondo were the two sports in which the greatest number of UAB students participated and in which the greatest number of medals were won: in swimming, 22 (18 in the CCU and 4 in the CEU) and in taekwondo, 17 (9 in the CCU and 8 in the CCE). The total of medals in swimming were 3 gold, 8 silver and 11 bronze medals. In taekwondo, 10 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze medals went to the UAB.
In female basketball, UAB students achieved the best results and won the championship in CAtalonia. The UAB basketball players were the only team to win the gold in the championship, which allowed them to continue onto the Spanish championships, where they unfortunately did not win a medal. According to the UAB's Physical Activity Service (SAF): "We were more selective in the level we demanded for athletes to participate. With regard to teams, we only sent one to the Spanich championships, since they are the ones to become champions of Catalonia: the female basketball team".
In the Catalan competition, the organisation awarded several UAB athletes with medals. Those who stood out the most were Alba Estrada Lorenzo (basketball), María Benach Zubero (rock-climbing), Sofía Téllez Lucero (fencing), Álex Albiñana Torné (golf), Judith Ravell Solé (orienteering), Alma María Pérez Parrado (taekwondo) and Mikel Fernández García (taekwondo).
Spanish Championships
As for the Spanish University Championships, 56 students participated in representation of the UAB (36 women and 20 men) and won 19 medals: 5 gold, 7 silver and 7 bronze.
In the European Universities Championship (EUC), which will take place in Hungary from 19 to 24 July, 8 students (5 women and 3 men) will represent the UAB in taekwondo.
The participation of UAB students in the three championships has been slightly lower than last year because there are athletes who are preparing for the Olympic Games (to be held this summer in Paris) and were not able to attend.
