This scientist has been distinguished for his work on magnetism at the UAB Department of Physics.
Jordi Prat
Jordi Prat, now a researcher with the Austrian Academy of Sciences but who previously belonged to the Superconductivity Group in the UAB's Department of Physics, has been included by Forbes magazine among the 30 most creative inventors under 30 years of age in the field of science and healthcare.

Together with Àlvar Sánchez, leader of the research group, and Carles Navau, Jordi Prat has taken part in designing and creating highly innovative magnetic devices. Forbes highlights the development of an "invisibility shield" that makes objects undetectable to magnetic fields. It also points to the creation of the first experimental magnetic wormhole, analogous to cosmic wormholes, which transfers a magnetic field from one end to the other while keeping it undetectable throughout.

The value of these studies, as Forbes emphasises, is that they open the door to future applications in medicine, such as improvements in magnetic resonance scans.

Creating the first magnetic wormhole was also picked out by the technology blog "Gizmodo.com" as one of the ten "coolest" science news items in 2015.

Jordi Prat was born in Manresa in 1988 and currently works in the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He gained a PhD in Physics at the UAB in 2015 and has published in high-impact journals like Science, Physical Review Letters and Scientific Reports. Together with UAB lecturers Àlvar Sánchez and Carles Navau he is the author of two patents, he has received the Vanguardia Science Award for one of the best scientific discoveries in 2012, and an Accessit in the City of Barcelona Prize, for research into magnetic field screening.
