Professor José Luis Balibrea Cantero passes away
José Luis Balibrea Cantero, professor and former dean of the Faculty of Medicine, passed away on Monday 23 October 2023. The University wishes to express it heartfelt sorrow for his passing and extends its condolences to all those who knew him and will miss him.
José Luis Balibrea Cantero passed away on 23 October 2023. He was professor and dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 1975 to 1978.
Professor Balibrea was born in Madrid in 1936. With a PhD from the Complutense University of Madrid, he was one of the most excellent figures in Spanish university surgery, whose projection in Europe and America is well known in his threefold teaching, care and research. His studies on carbon monoxide are pioneering in the scientific world and he was an internationally renowned author on the Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome and its respiratory repercussions.
In the past 25 years he maintained a close relationship with the Department of Surgery of the University of Salamanca. He was a member of the Spanish Society of Chemotherapy and president of the Spanish Association of Surgeons.
His extraordinary scientific career also included his intellectual and humanistic facets.
The funeral took place on Tuesday 24 October in the Sacramental Cemetery of Santa María in Madrid.
