The jury for this year's 8th Catalan PEN Translation Award went to Mireia Vargas-Urpí, lecturer in the Department of Translation and Interpreting, for her translation into Catalan of Wu Ming-Yi's The Man with the Compound Eyes, published by Editorial Chronos.

The jury particularly valued the quality with which the translator was able to reproduce in Catalan the different styles and registers of the novel in order to bring readers closer to the strangeness of a real and fantastic world that is culturally very unfamiliar.

Mireia Vargas Urpí holds a PhD in Translation and Intercultural Studies from the UAB. In the literary field she has translated into Catalan authors such as Sanmao (Rata) and Li Ang (Males Herbes). The winning work, her translation into Catalan of The Man with the Compound Eyes (L'home dels ulls compostos), is a novel about how empathy, memories and writing can heal the wounds of the soul.

The Catalan PEN Translation Awarded has been awarded since 2016 with the aim of recognising the best literary translations published in Catalan during the year prior to the award, in order to distinguish and dignify the work of translation professionals as cultural bridge builders.
