Centaures: rugby and comradeship

UAB rugby team, Centaures, is a member of ElDirectori, the oficial register for  UAB associations, and it is one of the sports sections that participates in the Catalan Universities Championship. Centaures is organized in areas, and each one of them has a chief that manages specific tasks. Nowadays, and even though the number varies, the team has 30 to 40 players that regularly attend the trainings on Monday and Wednesday from 6 to 8 pm. The coach is also a member of Centaures. Players are all UAB students from different knowledge areas, although most of them are veterinary students.

Even though rugby is considered a minor sport, Centaures represents this sports’ specific values at the UAB Campus, so women’s rugby team prevails and has even grown in the last few years. The most remarkable value of rugby, beyond conctac, is comradeship. The best example is the third half: once the match is over, both teams share food, drinks and songs to release the tensión created during the match.

Besides the three matches a year at the Catalan Universities Championship, Centaures also plays friendly matches, such as the so-called Horseshoe Tournament (in catalan, Torneig de la Ferradura). It took place during the UAB Festa Major and all Catalan universities’ rugby teams attended the event. Besides that, Centaures also attended on may a European Tournament in France, and has an exchange agreement with the university of Zaragoza.

Centaures aims at helping all students that play rugby to join a federation, so they can keep playing once they’ve left UAB. They also demand an insurance that covers all matches, not only the ones played at the Catalan Universities Championship, so the players can attend the matches unafraid of the consequences that an injury might have.
