On Són? 85 Anys d'Exhumacions de fosses comunes a la Guerra Civil a Catalunya

ON SON ?

“Where are they?” This is the question thousands of people ask about their relatives who died during the Spanish Civil War. Murdered in the rear guard, executed by the Francoist dictatorship, or, most commonly, killed at the front or in a hospital. For most of them, the burial site has never been known.

This exhibition is designed to inform the public about what the Government of Catalonia is doing regarding mass graves and what it has done in the past. It also highlights the exhumations initiated by the Republican Generalitat during the Civil War itself. Additionally, it presents the outcomes of these efforts and shares three examples of families who are searching for—or have found—their relatives who disappeared during the war.

At the same time, it serves as a tribute and recognition to those who have missing family members. The exhibition shows how the search for a missing person is conducted, how a mass grave is exhumed, and what happens to the remains that are identified and those that cannot be identified. It consists of six sections centered around mass graves, the disappeared, and their families.

This exhibition is curated by historian and professor Queralt Solé Barjau, and is structured into six thematic areas focused on mass graves, the disappeared, and their families.
