L'equip de la UAB queda en tercera posició
After winning all the debates of the eliminatory phase and the first semifinal, the representative team of the Autonomous University of Barcelona in the League of University Debate 2018 got the third position. The last phase of the League began on Monday, April 16th and ended on April 20th with the University of Valencia as the winner of this edition.

This year, the days of the University Debate League have been very intense. The subject of discussion the teams had to face was the same as that of the local phase: "Is the West responsible for the emergence of the Islamic State?". On February 28th, the team formed by Edward Bernal, Marc Castilla and Lluis Gaspar was proclaimed winner of the local phase of the League of Debate qualifying for the final phase. Later, they incorporated to their group Lucía Domínguez, member of the runner-up team, to compete in this last phase.

After a month of hard work and preparation, the team travelled on Monday April 16th to the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, where the final phase would take place. In this first day the teams and the schedules of the different debates were raffled. The UAB team had to face at 2 pm against the Miguel Hernández University. During the debate, they had to defend the position against making the West responsible for the emergence of the Islamic State they won.

On the second day the elimination phase took place and the UAB team won again. This time, defending the position in favor against the University of Andorra. The following day, Wednesday, April 18th, the team passed the third debate against the University of Alicante, qualifying for the semifinals. The first semifinal debate was against the Rovira i Virgili University, and the UAB won again. However, they finally lost the second debate against the Ramon Llull University, therefore getting third position.

The final debate was between the Ramon Llull University and the University of Valencia, and it was the second that ended up proclaiming itself the winner of this edition of the League of University Debate. The goal of the League of Debate is for students to improve their communicative skills when speaking in public and to express themselves correctly before an audience, skills increasingly important for university students. Participating in this activity is a way to enhance oratory skills.

You can consult the summaries of the debates and the sessions on the blog of the Debate League, see the development of all the debates of the final phase on the YouTube channel of the Catalan Universities Network and its follow-up on the UAB Community Twitter and of the Twitter of the Catalan Universities Network.

Congratulations to all the teams that have participated. We return next year looking for the answer to the question: "Should surrogate pregnancy be legalized?".
