Rubèn López and Guillermo García-Alías from the UAB Institute of Neuroscience, and Antoni Dávalos from the UAB Teaching Unit at the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital explained in an interview with the university the essence of ictus and traumatic medular and cerebral lesions, which are the focus of his research and the topics of this year's UAB Solidarity Run.
UAB
The UAB Institute of Neuroscience (InC) was founded in 2003 when a group of molecular biologists, physical therapists, neuropathologists, histologists, psychologists, psychobiologists and bioinformatics working at the UAB created it with the strategic aim of breaking away from traditional disciplines and taking on in a multidisciplinary and translational manner the key issues concerning the brain such as neurodegeneration, neuroregeneration and the bases of normal and abnormal brains.

The InC is interested in the functioning of normal brains, what happens when they fall ill, and how they cure themselves. The centre explores all levels of biological organisation ranging from the interaction of molecules to behaviour by using cell cultures, model animals and patients. The final goal is to develop new cell, molecular, and genetic therapies for the treatment of cerebral pathologies. Rubèn López and Guillermo García-Alías are researchers at the InC in charge of explaining these types of diseases.

Antoni Dávalos is a doctor specialised in Neurology. For 18 years, he was the head of the Neurology Section and Stroke Unit of the Hospital Josep Trueta in Girona, where he was also scientific director. He is head of the Neurology Unit and Clinical Director of the Neurosciences Area of the Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital since October 2004, and lecturer of the UAB Department of Medicine. He has contributed to implementing very important cutting-edge treatments for ictus, for which he has received international recognition and awards.
