The CampusRom collective has invited the entire UAB community to celebrate the International Day of the Gypsy People. The event was attended by members of the Integral Plan of the Roma People of the Department of Labor, Social Affairs and Families of the Government of Catalonia.
Dia Internacional del Poble Gitano
On April 8th, 1971, the first international gypsy congress was held in London, where the flag of the Gypsy People, its anthem and the international day were agreed upon. Forty-seven years later, the Autonomous University of Barcelona celebrates the International Day of the Gypsy People. It is the first time that a Catalan public university supports and celebrates this act. The conference was organized by CampusRom, the first Gypsy University Network of Catalonia, and has had the collaboration of the Integral Plan of the Gypsy People (PIPG) of the Department of Labor, Social Affairs and Families of the Government of Catalonia.

The CampusRom collective, registered in the elDirectori since December 2017, emerges as a network of support for the Roma students who try to access the university or a higher education training degree, or that are already enrolled. They inform them about the options and the possibilities they have to access them and accompany and support them throughout the training process. The main objective: to achieve a quality and successful education for the Gypsy People, creating references for the Roma community and society.

The event began at 11 am in the Auditori of the Faculty of Law of the UAB and has been open to all members of the university community. First, a video of Mr. Juan de Dios Ramírez Heredia, Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Granada and President of the "Romani Union" Gypsy Association, where he explained the origins of the International Day of the Gypsy People. Later, with the whole audience standing and excited, the gypsy hymn "Gelem, Gelem" ("Anduve, anduve") was screened.

The conference was also attended by PhD. Fernando Macías Aranda, Ph.D. in Education from the UB and member of PIPG, and PhD.  Teresa Sordé Martí, PhD in Sociology from Harvard University and lecturer Sierra Húnter at UAB . After making a break for coffee, the word has was given to several members of CampusRom. The event was closed by Mr. Ramón Vilchez, head of the PIPG, and, finally, the attendees have moved to the Plaça Cívica, where the UAB community has been invited to a delicious gypsy pot.
