The training course “Integrating the global dimension among the teaching staff of the School of Engineering” seeks to support teaching Sustainable Human Development and increase the awareness on social justice within engineering courses. The course is aimed at lecturers from Engineering and other scientific and technical profiles. It is based on a European initiative known as ‘Global Dimension in Engineering Education’. The training course will be delivered by Professor Josep Maria Basart of the UAB’s Department of Information and Communications Engineering.

This 15-hour training course comprises two 4-hour face-to-face sessions and eleven hours of independent work monitored via the virtual platform Moodle. The first session will take place on 25 April and the last one will take place on 9 May, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The course presents a pedagogical approach to the global dimension of engineering, the connection between science, technology and society, development and cooperation, Sustainable Human Development (SHD) and its relationship with technology, and the introduction of the global dimension in teaching activities.

Registrations to the course must be submitted before 20 April by filling in this form, provided by the UAB’s Teaching Training and Innovation Unit (IDES). This course is included in the IDES’ Teaching Training Plan; attendants will thus receive recognition in their teaching training curriculum.

This initiative came as a result of the collaboration between the UAB’ School of Engineering and the Autonomous Solidarity Foundation (FAS) following their purpose of working together to increase the awareness, critical understanding and attitudinal and sustainability values of undergraduates and postgraduates students in technical studies. There are other initiatives born as a result of their collaboration, such as workshops on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) integrated in the courses of 1st and 3rd year of the degrees taught at the School.

In parallel, this initiative is related to the ESDU programme (Education for Sustainable Development at University), conducted by the FAS and endorsed by the City of Barcelona. This programme seeks to promote Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) within formal education to enhance the role of university as a driver of social change.
