Santo Astorino is the winner of the UAB Jocs Florals. He won with the poem “El  mundo enfermo” (The Sick World), inspired by the lockdown we are experiencing. In his second Erasmus in Barcelona, he gave an interview to talk about how he is living this situation and the price he has been recently awarded as the winner of the contest.

Santo Astorino, Erasmus student of the UAB, is the recent winner of the Jocs Florals contest –organized by the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting and its Student Council in collaboration with the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Education Studies– in the category of Spanish for foreigners. This is the second time that Santo comes to Barcelona in Erasmus, but with the difference that, currently, he has found himself in the lockdown, like everybody.

In this interview, Santo Astorino explains that it is “ the first time that I participate in this kind of contest” and also “the first time that I write a poem in Spanish”. It is a poem inspired by the lockdown. “During the second week –he says–  I went out into the yard in my house and it was sunny and quiet” and he reached the emotional state he needs to write.

Until then, Santo used to show the city to other UAB international students. He says that he does not find many differences between the universities of Barcelona and Calabria, his home town, even if, he states, that here “I have met people from all over the world”.

Now, he will probably keep writing at his home, expecting to be able to “get back to the normal life of the Vila unversitaria”. Meanwhile, we can get to know him better in the interview he gave from the dining room of his house.
