The UAB and on-campus research centres form part of the numerous entities offering a variety of popular science activities around Catalonia from 8 to 17 November.

Cartell de la Setmana de la Ciència

Organised by the Catalan Research and Innovation Foundation (FCRI), the 29th Science Week in Catalonia (SC’24) will be held from 8 to 17 November. A variety of scientific and technological activities will be held in different parts of Catalonia.

UAB CAMPUS ACTIVITIES

Genographic: the human genetics variability game

Throughout the Science Week, the Faculty of Biosciences offers the possibility to participate in the online game Genogràfic. The board game's main objective is to bring citizens closer to knowledge about the genetic composition of human populations and the discovery of examples of human adaptation to different environments. Through these, it promotes respect for the intrinsic genetic and cultural diversity of our species, and promotes intercultural growth and a move towards a more sustainable development. In a playful way, it allows players to discover how climate, diet or metabolism determine the evolution of our species. The game was developed with the support of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona's Solidarity Fund.

Adapta’t: the history of our evolution as seen in our genome

The Faculty of Biosciences also presents a collection of interactive virtual activities available throughout the week on the website https://adaptat.omicsuab.org/activitats/ to delve into the secrets of the past that are hidden in our genomes. Current genomes preserve information about the evolutionary history of our species and can reveal how different human populations have adapted to major cultural changes, such as the transition from hunter-gatherer populations to Neolithic agricultural settlements, or how some populations manage to survive in extreme environments, such as the Inuit in the freezing Arctic tundras. The activity invites users to navigate through the genomes and discover them for themselves. The activities will be announced throughout the week through the Instagram account @adaptatapsuab.

Educational Geogymkhana

Organised by the Department of Geology and the Faculty of Science, the Geogymkhana is a playful-scientific activity aimed at secondary school students of Geology and Environmental Sciences with interest in geology and other related fields (environmental sciences, chemistry, materials science, etc.). Throughout the morning of 8 and 15 November, students must find five points on campus where they will have to perform tests of a geological nature, such as identifying rocks, minerals, fossils, finding the water table or simulating a volcano.

#LookUp. Looking at the sky with the Institute for Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC)

On Monday 11 November from 6:30 h to 8:00 p.m. the Institute for Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC) organises the fourth edition of its night observations, with specialised telescopes open to the public on the campus of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. The observations will take place at the UAB Plaça Cívica.

Open Days at the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM)

From 12 to 15 November, the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona offers guided visits with research and technical staff of the CSIC, who will show the Micro and Nanofabrication Clean Room and the Museum Space of Microelectronics. Visitors will be able to learn from CSIC staff how a silicon chip is made, how it works and what it takes to manufacture it. The institute exhibits equipment used to design, manufacture and measure microelectronic devices and circuits, as well as interactive videos, information panels and prototypes of devices and circuits. The visit includes a tour of the outdoor corridor of the Micro and Nanofabrication Clean Room, one of the largest clean rooms in southern Europe.

Open Day at the synthetic biology laboratory of the Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (IBB-UAB)

On 13 November starting at 3 p.m., the Synthetic Biology Laboratory of the Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (IBB-UAB), led by Dr Maria Lluch, will open its doors to explain the projects that are being developed to design new therapies based on genetically modified bacteria for the treatment of cancer.

Guided visit to the Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC)

The ICE-CSIC is located on the campus of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and on 15 November at 5:30 p.m., the centre will open its doors to the general public. Visitors will be able to see the laboratories where instrumentation for space and ground-based missions is built, the building's telescope and the centre's meteorite collection. In addition, there will be a talk by the centre's staff members.

  • 14 November

Workshop “Phylogenome: You decide the history of genome sequencing” at the Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (IBB-UAB)

On 14 November, the Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (IBB-UAB) will be offering a visit to the Genomics Service of the UAB to learn about the equipment available for genome sequencing. The visit includes participation in the PhyloGenome card game. Combining scientific concepts and strategy, the game allows players to decide how the story of genome sequencing will unfold. With three types of cards and unexpected twists, each game is unique and full of excitement.

“Veus” conferences

On 14 November the UAB will offer the “Veus” conferences, a series of talks that aim to share transformative and inspiring knowledge generated at the UAB with the general public. The conferences will take place at the UAB Theatre Hall, located in the Plaça Cívica, from 3:00 to 6:30 p.m. More information can be found at this website: https://webs.uab.cat/veus/presentacio/.
