The UAB to award honorary doctorates to Judith Butler, Emmanuelle Soubeyran and Matthew O. Jackson

The UAB Governing Council has approved the appointment of three new honorary doctorates: Judith Butler, proposed by the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting; Emmanuelle Soubeyran, proposed by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine; and Matthew O. Jackson, proposed by the Faculty of Economics and Business Studies. The investiture ceremonies will take place soon.

Judith Butler holds the University of California, Berkeley, Distinguished Chair in Comparative Literature. Her contributions to the fields of philosophy and feminist and queer theory, as explained in the honorary doctorate proposal, are among the most influential of our time worldwide. The distinction seeks to recognise Butler's contribution "to the development of contemporary critical thought and, in particular, for her decisive impact on translation and multicultural studies, East Asian studies, and reflection on feminism and queer theory as values ​​of global justice and university ethics."

Emmanuelle Soubeyran is the Director-General of the World Organisation for Animal Health since 2024. She is an renowned figure in the fields of animal health and veterinary public health, with an internationally recognised professional career that stands out for her commitment to the advancement of health, animal welfare and food safety. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine proposes her as an honorary doctorate "for her outstanding contributions to veterinary public health, to global governance in the field of animal health, to higher education, and to the promotion of the one health paradigm".

Matthew O. Jackson holds the position of William D. Eberle Professor of Economics at Stanford University. His research revolves around the study of decision-making by economic agents, and the consequences that these decisions have for society. He has published numerous research articles in the fields of game theory, decision theory, social choice theory, and artificial intelligence. He particularly emphasises the impact of his pioneering contributions to the analysis of the role of networks in the economy and social life.
