The American College of Surgeons (ACS) is the leading global organisation dedicated to improving surgical care and upholding ethical and quality standards in medical practice. With more than 80,000 members, the ACS is an international leader in surgical training, research, and innovation. The Convocation Ceremony is the organisation’s most solemn event. During this event, Fellowships (FACS) are awarded to new members and Honorary Membership titles are granted to internationally renowned surgeons.

On 4 October at the McCormick Place convention center in Chicago, the ACS invested seven outstanding international surgeons as Honorary Members. Among them, Professor Lluís Grande, from Barcelona, for his leadership in the field of general and transplant surgery, as well as for his academic and scientific contribution in the international arena. This distinction recognises professionals who, outside the United States, have achieved consolidated prestige or have provided relevant humanitarian services in the field of medicine.

The event began at 5:45 p.m. with a procession of ACS dignitaries, Initiates, and officials, and included the national anthems of Canada and the United States, a welcome from ACS President Dr. Beth H. Sutton, and a Presidential Address by Dr. Anton N. Sidawy. The highlight was the investiture of Honorary Fellows, conducted by the ACS President, with the participation of Dr Fabrizio Michelassi, Chairman of the Board of Regents. Along with Professor Grande, titles were given to surgeons from countries such as the Netherlands, India, Ireland, Germany, Scotland, and Mexico.

With this appointment, Professor Grande becomes the first member of the UAB to receive this distinction from the American College of Surgeons. This recognition strengthens the faculty's international ties and highlights the contribution of Catalan and Spanish surgeons to the progress of global medicine.
