UAB lecturer presents programme on Sardinia's endangered languages on Italian TV
The show, Beni cun me in Amèrica, airs each Sunday in October on the RAI3 channel and focuses on Sardinian emigrants who explain their emigration stories in their own languages. The episodes can be viewed on the RAI website.
Adrià Martín Mor, lecturer in the Department of Translation and Interpreting & East Asian Studies at the UAB, folk singer, translator and researcher in technologies for minoritised languages, stars in the Italian television channel RAI3's programme Beni cun me in Amèrica, a four-episode series filmed entirely in the languages of Sardinia, all of them endangered.
The new season is a continuation of the Beni cun me project, aired for the first time in 2021, and focuses on emigration, a widespread phenomenon among the Sardinian community. The programme combines the experience of emigrating with the language and cultural diversity found on the island.
The series is aired each Sunday in October 2025 at 10:00 a.m. on RAI3, and can also be viewed on RaiPlay.
In the past three years, Adrià Martín has also taught translation at the California State University, Long Beach, a time in which he continued to pursue his interest in the languages and cultures of Sardinia. Equipped with a camera, he travelled around the United States to meet Sardinians who had emigrated and recorded their stories, their dreams and the ties they maintained with their land of origin.
The episodes include locations such as Los Angeles, New York, New Jersey and North Carolina, as well as Alguer and Sàsser (Sardinia), and includes interviews with people such as Vincenzo Porcu, entrepreneur and owner of the restaurant Carasau (Culver City); Mirko Pisu, emigrant of Santu ‘Èngiu; Franca Bulloni, actress; Simona Vacca, owner of the Sardinian ice cream parlour in West Covina; Silvia Pilia, singing in Turritan, and Francesc Usai, owner of a camp site in Alguer.
In 2021, Martín Mor released the album Lo somrís de la magrana, with songs in Central Catalan, Alguerese Catalan and Sardinian, which he published under a Creative Commons license and which can be downloaded on his website.
Martín Mor's research career includes collaboration in the creation of the first automatic translator for the Sardinian language, publications with municipal institutions on the Italian island, and several articles on linguistic technologies and minority languages. He is also a founding member and promoter of Sardware, an association created and inspired in Softcatalà that works for the presence of the Sardinian language in technology, with which he has participated in the creation of the first Sardinian operating system for mobile phones and in the Wikifèminas project.
