Universidad de La Laguna awards Amparo Moreno an honorary doctorate
Amparo Moreno, professor in the UAB Department of Journalism and Communication Studies, was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Universidad de La Laguna in a ceremony which took place on 18 January in the university's auditorium, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Lara Carrascosa, professor of the Department of Communication Studies and Social Work of the ULL, was Amparo Moreno's sponsor. At the ceremony, presided over by ULL Rector Francisco García Rodríguez, honorary doctorates were also awarded to Senegalese writer Ken Bugul, gender and science specialist Londa Schiebinger, from Stanford University; and chemist Nicholas Peppas, from the University of Texas at Austin.
Professor Moreno was an editor of the El Noticiero Universal and El Correo Catalán newspapers, and a member of the Democratic Group of Journalists which existed during the last years of Franco's dictatorship. From 1973-1974 until her retirement, she taught at the Faculty of Communication Studies of the UAB. She has been director of the Laboratory of Journalism and Communication for a Plural Citizenship, promoter of the Infoparticipa Seal in transparency and quality in municipal, county and provincial administration websites. She has always been an active feminist and received the tribute of the UAB in the institutional event on the occasion of the International Women's Day in 2014, organised by the Observatory for Equality.
