Participation Beyond the classroom, a world to discover

British Parlament

25/26 Edition

Attention: There are no more places left in timetable 2: Thursdays from 12:45 pm to 2:45 pm.

The aim of this activity is to promote the use of speech and argumentation as a basic tool of communication, and to introduce participants, through practice, to the British Parliament (BP) debate model.

The activity is organized in collaboration with the student group specializing in this debate format: the Grup d'Argumentació i Debat (GAD), which runs weekly training sessions and debates throughout the academic year. These provide tools for participation in this type of competition. At the end of each semester, an internal league is held among members to put knowledge into practice. In addition, GAD selects some members to represent UAB in competitions at other universities.

In the British Parliament debate format, each debate consists of four teams, two in favor and two against, each made up of two speakers. The first team in favor is called the Government Upper House (CAG); the first team against, the Opposition Upper House (CAO); the second team in favor, the Government Lower House (CBG); and the second team against, the Opposition Lower House (CBO). Within each team, each speaker has a specific role, which determines the order of interventions. Each speech lasts seven minutes. The debate topic, called the “motion,” changes in every round and is only announced to participants fifteen minutes before the debate begins.
