Xavier Gabarrell, new Vice Rector for Campus and Sustainability at the UAB

The rector of the UAB, Javier Lafuente, has approved two changes in the university's governing team. Xavier Gabarrell is the new Vice Rector for Campus and Sustainability and Antonio Espinosa has been appointed assistant to the Vice Rector for Campus and Sustainability for information and communication technologies.

Xavier Gabarrell

Gabarrell is professor in the Department of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering. He holds a degree in Chemical Sciences (Industrial Chemistry) from the UAB and a PhD in the Biotechnology Programme (1995). He was director of the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA-UAB) from 2003 to 2006, and from 2018 to 2022. He is the researcher in charge of the Sustainability and Environmental Prevention research group (SosteniPrA, SGR). He is a member of the board of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and scientific coordinator of the ECIU University's SMART-ER programme.

His research has focused on environmental biotechnology - waste treatment using fungi, etc. - as well as industrial ecology, material flows, urban sustainability indicators, sustainability of energy crops, environmental prevention, waste management and environmental assessment in business. Professor Gabarrell joins Rector Javier Lafuente's team to replace Professor Carme Miralles.

Antonio Espinosa is lecturer in the Department of Computer Architecture and Operating Systems. He is a computer engineer and holds a PhD in Computer Science from the UAB. He is deputy coordinator of the Bachelor's Degree in Artificial Intelligence and PhD coordinator of the Department of Computer Architecture and Operating Systems. He has also been deputy director of Promotion, Communication and Relations with Entities of the School of Engineering.
