Several Catalan universities, including the UAB, and a number of research and technology centres have come together to create a cluster for microelectronics and nanoelectronics technology training, as well as training in other complementary scientific and technological disciplines, as a way to meet the demands of the semiconductor industry.

The new cluster in micro and nanoelectronic technology training will offer academic courses, continuous learning and recycling courses, graduate courses and a joint master's degree. It will also be in charge of coordinating the industrial PhD programmes. The initiative forms part of the decision to provide Catalonia with support as one of the headquarters of the semiconductor and microchips industry.

Several universities and research and technology centres have teamed up with the Barcelona and Girona Chambers of Commerce to promote Catalonia as the headquarters of one of the semiconductor factories which will be built in the European Union, in which the microchips industry will be a decisive and highly potential sector. In fact, one of the Spanish Government's Strategic Projects for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE) will be in the area of microchips and semiconductors and will receive a public investment of 11 billion euros from the NextGenerationEU recovery plan.

In addition to the UAB, the agreement to create this cluster includes the University of Barcelona (UB), the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), the University of Girona (UdG), the Rovira i Virgili University (URiV), the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona of the Spanish National Research Council (IMB-CNM, CSIC), and the Eurecat technological centre.
