The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and Parc Taulí Hospital today inaugurated the Faculty of Medicine's new Teaching Unit. The 225 students from the 2016/17 academic year inaugurated new equipment, and now will enjoy double the space for facilities which will represent a notable comfort for the educational community. The new Teaching Unit now occupies almost 2,000 square metres, distributed in the buildings Victòria Eugènia (until now all facilities were located there) and the VII Centenari (building now housing the new facilities). The construction of the new facilities were funded by the UAB and cost a total of 1.2 million Euros.

The official opening included the presence of several university, healthcare and local authorities. Margarita Arboix, Rector of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, expressed her gratitude to all those who helped in making the enlargement of the space a reality and affirmed that “the hospital and Faculty of Medicine must always work hand in hand”. Juli Fernàndez, Mayor of Sabadell, praised the efforts of both the Parc Taulí Consortium and the UAB: “the hospital represents one of the greatest opportunities of our town”, he assured visitors before stating that Sabadell “wants to be a town of reference for the UAB”.

Josep Pallarès, General Director of Universities, explained that inaugurations “are important and especially in difficult times”, but more important was “the quality of the content generated”. Modesto Custodio, President of the Corporació Sanitària Parc Taulí, congratulated his team for the academic results of the first graduates: “the good results of our students in the national medical residency tests (MIR) are solid proof of the quality of the Faculty of Medicine's Teaching Unit at the Parc Taulí”. Finally, Joan Puigdollers, Manager of the Àmbit Metropolità de la Regió Sanitària de Barcelona, defended the teamwork: “searching for synergies between universities, town councils, governments, etc. is essential to improve the society of knowledge”.

The new facilities stand out for their luminosity and spaciousness, with each room fully equipped with the latest technology. The Victòria Eugènia building houses the administrative quarters and laboratories, and the VII Centenari building includes lecture and seminar rooms, which occupy a whole floor of this building. All academic areas are equipped with the newest audiovisual facilities, computer network connectivity and full Wifi coverage. New furniture has also been added to the teaching areas. There will be four aula magnas, four seminar rooms, a conference hall, a basic simulation hall and two laboratories.

The students will also have access to the equipment at Parc Taulí, such as the Centre for Simulation of Basic Medical Education, among others. The teaching staff of the Teaching Unit includes 90 lecturers, of which 85 are practitioners of all specialisations at the Parc Taulí and 5 lecturers from the UAB Sphere.

Excellent Results of Students from the Parc Taulí Teaching Unit

Parc Taulí is a teaching unit of the UAB Faculty of Medicine since the 2009/10 academic year, with five graduating classes already. Each year there is a high percentage of students who achieve excellent scores in their national medical residency tests, MIR.

One of the most recent examples are the latest MIR exams, in which a total of 11,681 students from all faculties of medicine around Spain aspired to occupy one of the 6,098 places available in public hospitals. A total of 39 students from Parc Taulí took the exam and 37 of them were awarded a place. Of these, 15 scored among the first 1,000 and three of them ranked among the first 100 (53, 76 and 86).
Parc Taulí is one of the six teaching units of the UAB Faculty of Medicine, together with Hospital del Mar, Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, Hospital Vall d'Hebron and Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol, in which 3rd to 6th year students attend classes, and the Bellaterra Teaching Unit for first and second year students.
