Students Anna Vilà, Gorka Samaniego and Nieves Galobardes win the University Debate League 2019 in representation of UAB
Students Anna Vilà, Gorka Samaniego and Nieves Galobardes won the University Debate League 2019, organised by Xarxa Vives d’Universitats, on 11 April.
The final round of the inter-university contest, which took place in Universitat Abat Oliba CEU (Barcelona), started on Tuesday 8 April and ended on 11 April. This year’s edition had a total participation of 1400 students from 16 different universities who had to debate on the topic: “Should surrogacy be legalized?”
During the four days of this last round, the UAB team won two out of the three debates in the knockout phase with enough score as to classify for the semifinal phase. They debated against University of Lleida in the first semi-final debate and against Universitat Jaume I in the second one.
The last debate was disputed between UAB and Universitat Ramon Llull. The jury finally chose the UAB team as winner. On the other hand, student Ángeles Grimalt, member of the University of Valencia team, won a prize for the Best Orator.
The University Debate League aims to encourage the use of words through dialectical confrontation between different groups that will have to defend a position for or against a hot topic.
Local Phase in UAB
The University Debate League’s local phase started in UAB on 19 March and ended on 21 March. A total of nine teams took part in this year’s edition. After three days of intense debates, the team formed by Anna Vilà, Gorka Samaniego and Neus Galobardes won the local phase, becoming the representatives of UAB in the final phase.
High School Debate League
The High School Debate League offers students a first touch contact with university. The final phase was held in Universitat Abat Oliba CEU from 3 to 5 April and the team INS Can Roca, in representation of UAB, reached the semi-final phase. Teams from different high schools had to debate for or against the topic: “Are borders between countries necessary?”
