Joana Gallego
Joana Gallego, professor at the Faculty of Communication Sciences, has taken on the position as director of the Observatory for Equality, taking over from Teresa Freixes. The Governing Team aims to spur more communication at the Observatory, with the aim of strengthening its role as an awareness-raiser.
The Observatory began its activities at the UAB in 2005, and was mainly focused in fostering studies and research on equality between women and men. In 2008, it grew to act in favour of all collectives which could find themselves in unfavourable conditions due to physical, economic, or social situations. The Observatory for Equality is now focused on the analysis of inequalities in higher education, and specifically on the study and diagnosis of sexism, and on disability based inequalities, from an intersectional perspective; offering technical support in the design and evaluation of equality policies; and increasingly involved in raising awareness of these issues amongst the UAB community.

Writer and Journalist

Joana Gallego has spent 30 years researching and writing about the treatment of women in the media. In 2001 she was awarded the First Prize of the Audiovisual Council of Catalonia for a research project she directed entitled "La prensa por dentro" (The Press from Within).
Some of her publications are Periodismo social (2014); De reinas a ciudadanas. Medios de comunicación ¿motor o rémora para la igualdad (2013); Putas de película. Cien años de prostitución en el cine (2012); Eva devuelve la costilla, (2010); Si te vas te mato.
