International seminar to analyse hate discourses and the role of the media

The United Nations declared 2019 International Year of Moderation and the UAB dedicates this academic year to the welcoming of refugees. In this context, the OMEC and the FAS will be holding on 10 and 11 April a seminar on hate discourses and the promotion of eqalitarian societies.

On 10 and 11 April, the Sala de juntes of the Faculty of Communication Studies will play host to the international seminar "Communication, Development and Human Rights: towards the promotion of egalitarian and intercultural societies", organised by the Observatory for Communication in the Mediterranean (OMEC) and the Fundació Autònoma Solidària, with support from the UAB Solidarity Funds.

This meeting will serve for different experts to analyse today's hate discourses and the role the media plays in disseminating them, while at the same time it will focus on initiatives different organisations propose to contribute to social change. This seminar is one of the activities included in the education for development project entitled "Communication as a Tool for Social Cohesion Against Racism and Intolerance".

On 10 April, at 11 a.m., the seminar will commence with a conference on "Communication as a Tool for Change: the experience with prevention among minors", offered by Francisco Martín, journalist and representative of the Darna Social Centre. At 1 p.m., Adriano Messias, lecturer at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica, São Paulo, will speak on "The Dusk of Homo sapiens? Reflections on Civilisation and Monstrous Technologies".

The second day of the seminar will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the presentation of a UAB action in this area. "The Role of University in Processes of Change" will include the participation of Teresa Velázquez, President of OMEC; and Jordi Prat, Director of FAS. Following, Laura Riba form the FAS Area of Cooperation and Education for Global Justice will speak on "#UABRefugi: the university defending the rights of migrants and refugees".

The programme will then end with two round tables. The first one will begin at 11 a.m. and is entitled "Hate Discourses in the Media", and will focus on the current issues of intolerance, Islamophobia in the media and experiences in responding to this phenomenon by the PROXI observatory. At 12:30 p.m the second round table will begin, entitled "Communication for Social Change and Human Rights", in which participative communication issues will be discussed, as well as the case of the Latin Elephant, fact-checking against fake news and the reality of those fleeing from Central America.
