Last Tuesday 22 January, a total of 17 high schools that will take part in the Debate League attended a training session in university’s Sala Teatre. Sara Moreno, Vice-Rector for Students and Employability, welcomed them in the ceremony. During her intervention, she pointed out that these debate sessions allow students to make first contact with the university world.
Training session was in charge of David Gutiérrez, post-doctoral researcher in the Area of Employment Law and Social Security. Gutiérrez used his personal experience to provide guidelines and advices on how to make a formal academic debate. He also set up the staging of the League with the teams and jury’s tables, which made the session more dynamic.
Afterwards, Ana València and Xavier Alejandre, from Unitat de Dinamització Comunitària, the explained the league’s competition methodology and pointed out that they want the debate to trend in social media. The league, which encourages the use of words amongst students with the pretext of a dialectical confrontation between teams, will have a Twitter account during this year’s debate.
The topic for debate in this 5th edition will be: “Are borders between countries necessary?” You can find the latest news and follow the High School Debate League live in the Suma’t al Debat de la UAB blog, the League’s Twitter account and Dinamització Comunitària’s instagram account.
