Salvador Ventura appointed member of the Academia Europaea

Salvador Ventura, researcher of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and of the Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (IBB-UAB),  has been appointed member of the Academia Europaea in recognition of his research work.

Professor Ventura specialises in the design and structure of proteins. He leads the Protein Folding and Conformational Diseases research group at the IBB, where together with his team he combines computational and experimental approaches to study protein folding and its effects on numerous pathologies, with the objective of developing innovative therapies that can treat these diseases. In addition, he uses this multidisciplinary knowledge to fabricate new multifunctional protein-based nanomaterials for biomedical and biotechnological purposes.

Salvador Ventura has spent research stays at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Harvard Medical School and Karolinska Institutet. He has published more than 270 scientific articles, participated in more than 60 competitive projects and agreements with companies, and is the author of 17 patents. He has received the Research Excellence Award from the UAB, the Manuel Rico-Bruker Award from the Spanish Society of Biophysics, the Narcís Monturiol Medal for scientific and technological merit from the Generalitat de Catalunya, and three times the ICREA-Academy Award in Life Sciences and Medicine.

It focuses on research for public benefit and the advancement of education for the public of all ages. It promotes European research, advises governments and international organisations on scientific matters, and encourages interdisciplinary and international research. Its members - some 6,000 at present - are eminent scientists and scholars spanning the full range of knowledge disciplines.
