Vicent Fonollosa becomes new member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia
The Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia recently appointed Vicent Fonollosa i Pla, professor at the Department of Medicine and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, a new member of the academy.

On Sunday 21 March, the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia held an event to welcome its new academy member, Dr Vicent Fonollosa i Pla. The dean of the Faculty of Medicine gave an acceptance speech entitled “Reflexions sobre la deshumanització de la medicina i la humanització en l’ensenyament de la medicina” [Reflections on the Dehumanisation of Medicine and the Humanisation of the Teaching of Medicine]. The response speech was given by Dr Miquel Vilardell, and the event included the attendance of members of the academy and UAB Rector Javier Lafuente.
Vicent Fonollosa i Pla, Professor of the Department of Medicine and specialist in internal medicine at the University Hospital Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona, received his degree in Medicine and Surgery from the UAB in the second cohort of graduates (1975). He was in charge of the subject of rheumatology and systemic autoimmune diseases, and of the biological bases of pathologies, and coordinator of the third year of the bachelor's degree in Medicine, in addition to other academic activities. His research has focused on systemic autoimmune diseases and on scleroderma disease in particular. He has published over 200 papers in indexed journals and 25 chapters in books, as well as directed 25 doctoral theses. He was national coordinator of the scleroderma research line of the Systemic Autoimmune Diseases Group of the Spanish Internal Medicine Society, and head of the National Registry for Scleroderma Patients (RESCLE).
Dr Fonollosa, Dean at the Faculty of Medicine since 2017, was also Vice Dean of Academic Affairs, Director of the Department of Medicine and coordinator of the Vall d'Hebron Teaching Unit. Previously, he had been appointed corresponding academic of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia, and was president of the Catalan-Balearic Society of Internal Medicine, as well as member of the European Consortium on Systemic Sclerosis Genetics, and reviewer and member of the publishing boards of several biomedical journals. Among the many awards he has received are the Farreras-Valenti, Joan Vivancos and Josep Font awards, as well as the Prize for Professional Excellence in the Hospital Medicine category, conferred onto him by the Council of Medical Associations of Catalonia.
