Ideal student profile

The ideal student profile is that of someone wishing to pursue a career in research or management in the private sector, in public research institutes with projects in the field of biomedicine, in hospitals with research programmes or projects, in official or private international healthcare bodies, or NGOs. Alternatively, it could be that of a healthcare professional who wishes to specialise in the new multidisciplinary vision of One Health.

It is considered important to have knowledge of the working languages of the different modules. Students should be able to adequately follow a lecture, debate, presentation etc. and so should have a minimum level of B1 in Spanish and English, on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Basic skills

  • Use acquired knowledge as a basis for originality in the application of ideas, often in a research context.
  • Solve problems in new or little-known situations within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to the field of study.
  • Integrate knowledge and use it to make judgements in complex situations, with incomplete information, while keeping in mind social and ethical responsibilities.
  • Communicate and justify conclusions clearly and unambiguously to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • Continue the learning process, to a large extent autonomously.

Specific skills

  • Display understanding and familiarity with using the methodologies and tools of zoonotic risk assessment based on the concept of One Health.
  • Take decisions on the establishment of zoonosis surveillance and containment plans.
  • Analyse the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and control of the major zoonoses based on the vision of One Health.
  • Describe and interpret the dynamics of the emerging zoonoses and their person-animal-wildlife-vector-environment interfaces.
  • Manage and report on the risk of zoonoses in special situations, health emergencies or biological threats.
  • Identify the principles behind the concept of food safety and security and apply them, following the precepts of the vision of One Health.
  • Detect the zoonoses that could affect food safety, identifying critical areas and drawing up plans for prevention or control.
  • Design, plan and carry out a research project on zoonotic agents, based on the vision of One Health.
  • Work alone or in a multidisciplinary team within the area of study, showing critical reasoning and creativity, and the ability to analyse, interpret and synthesise the data generated.
