On 22 May, 180 children from the CROMA 2.0 programme, overseen by the Fundació Autònoma Solidària (FAS), visited the campus of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). They were accompanied by 27 UAB students who collaborate with the project as volunteers or interns. The children had the opportunity to explore the campus first-hand and present the various projects they had developed with the support of research groups at the university.

CROMA 2.0 is a socio-educational programme aimed at primary school pupils in Years 5 and 6 who are in situations of socio-economic vulnerability. Its goal is to spark their interest in learning and provide educational support outside of school hours. Throughout the academic year, UAB students have led workshops, study support activities and research projects in schools located near the campus.
Seventeen schools from four Catalan municipalities — Sabadell, Terrassa, Montcada i Reixac, and Rubí — took part in the programme this year, with 27 student volunteers from the UAB involved.
At the start of the visit, the children presented the results of the research projects they had worked on during the workshops. Over the past few months, they had explored various topics, including social cinema, pollution reduction and respectful relationships.
The projects presented were as follows:
How to Reduce Pollution at School and in the Neighbourhood, developed jointly with the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) and the Centre for Research in Science and Mathematics Education (CRECIM). This project aimed to improve understanding of CO₂ emissions and how to reduce them.
Social Cinema, led by the Research Group in the Teaching of Social Science (GREDICS), which used film as a tool to introduce children to pressing social issues.
Penguins in practice, designed by the School for a Culture of Peace (ECP), focused on fostering care, respect, self-esteem, and the improvement of social relationships.
During their visit, the children took part in hands-on activities organised by various UAB research centres. ICTA ran a session entitled Get to Know ICTA and Help Us Reduce Emissions; GREDICS offered Thought Bites; at the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting, in collaboration with the Institute of Government and Public Policy (IGOP), the children learned about the work of PhD researchers and participated in a practical workshop exploring their environment through the fable of The Lion and the Hummingbird. Meanwhile, the ECP held a session called Get to Know the ECP at the Faculty of Communication Sciences.
Afterwards, the children were able to visit and enjoy key areas of the university on a treasure hunt, while interacting with UAB students.
The day concluded with a group photo in front of the UAB’s iconic columns — capturing a memorable and enriching experience.
The visit was made possible thanks to the commitment of the entire volunteer team involved in the programme and saw the participation of representatives from several partner or funding institutions.
CROMA 2.0 is supported by participating municipalities, the Barcelona Provincial Council and the Government of Catalonia. It also collaborates with other local stakeholders, such as the Department of Education and the Vallès Occidental County Council.
