Twenty-six university students in refugee situations receive study grants
In order to enable young people seeking refuge to continue their university studies, these grants are awarded to cover expenses such as materials, technology or other items necessary for academic training. Specifically, 17 Enginy grants and 9 study grants to young people affected by the conflict in Ukraine have been awarded.
As a complementary initiative to the #UABRefugi Grants, the programme for the reception of people seeking refuge at the UAB, managed by the UAB's Solidarity Foundation (FAS), published two calls for applications that aim to compensate the situations of special economic vulnerability that make it difficult for refugee students to continue their studies. These students face major obstacles when it comes to resuming and continuing their university studies due to the social, administrative and economic vulnerability that refugee status entails.
Per una banda, en la IV Convocatòria Beques Enginy de suport a l’estudi per a estudiants universitaris en situació de refugi (2023-2024), cofinançades per la Fundació Caixa d’Enginyers, la Fundació UAB i la mateixa universitat, s’ha resolt amb ajuts per a 17 estudiants per un import total de 9.921,66 €. Els ajuts són per costejar material per l’estudi o per a les pràctiques, despeses de transport o compra en tecnologia. La comissió avaluadora ha estat formada per les figures següents: representació de la Fundació Caixa d’Enginyers, de l’Equip de Govern UAB, vicegerència d’Ordenació Acadèmica de la UAB, el director de la Fundació Autònoma Solidària i l’equip tècnic del Programa d’Acollida de persones en situació de refugi.
In addition, in the 4th Enginy call for study grants for refugee university students (2023/24), co-funded by the Caixa d'Enginyers Foundation, the UAB Foundation, and the UAB itself, has awarded 17 grants to students for a total amount of €9,921.66. The grants are to cover the cost of study materials or work placements, transport costs or technology purchases. The evaluation committee was made up of the following figures: representatives of the Caixa d’Enginyers Foundation, the UAB Governing Team, the UAB Vice Rector for Academic Planning, the director of the UAB Solidarity Foundation and the technical team of the Programme for the Reception of Refugees.
Welcoming refugees to the UAB
On a global scale, the increase in global problems such as armed conflicts, environmental and economic insecurity, persecution of minorities, etc., has contributed to a substantial increase in forced displacement. According to UNHCR data, by the end of 2023 the figure of 100 million displaced people in the world will have been reached. Within the refugee population, only 7% have access to university (UNHCR, 2023).
Davant d’aquest context, la UAB desplega una iniciativa d’acollida universitària orientada a promoure els drets de les persones refugiades i amb necessitat de protecció internacional, coneguda com el “Programa d’Acollida de persones en cerca de refugi a la UAB”. Aquest projecte és coordinat per la Fundació Autònoma Solidària (FAS) i facilita estratègies d’acollida comunitària, acollida acadèmica, sensibilització i formació sobre els fenòmens dels desplaçaments forçosos i la mobilitat humana al context universitari. Des del seu inici l’any 2016, més de 100 estudiants en situació de refugi s’han matriculat a estudis superiors a la UAB a través de la Convocatòria d’Ajuts #UABRefugi, a estudis de grau, màster i/o doctorat públics i oficials. La UAB afavoreix l’accés a formació superior pública i oficial per a estudiantat amb necessitat de protecció internacional amb la publicació de la Convocatòria d’Ajuts #UABRefugi curs 2023-24, que inclou l’exempció de matrícula i altres taxes i despeses acadèmiques.
In this context, the UAB deploys a university reception initiative aimed at promoting the rights of refugees and people in need of international protection, known as the "Programme for the Reception of people seeking refuge at the UAB" (Programa d’Acollida de persones en cerca de refugi a la UAB). This project is coordinated by the UAB's Solidarity Foundation and facilitates community reception strategies, academic reception, awareness-raising and training on the phenomena of forced displacement and human mobility in the university context. Since its inception in 2016, more than 100 students in refugee situations have enrolled in higher education at the UAB through the #UABRefugi Call for Grants, in public and official undergraduate, master's and/or PhD studies. The UAB promotes access to public and official higher education for students in need of international protection with the publication of the Call for #UABRefugi Grants for the 2023/24 academic year, which includes exemption from tuition and other fees and academic expenses.
