In accordance with the measure Organise an institutional ceremony to commemorate the International Women’s Day, which shall include an acknowledgement to a person, a department, or a centre within the UAB framework what stands out for its defence of women’s rights, from the Action Plan for Equality between women and men, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona holds annually a ceremony for the International Women’s Day around 8 March. The Observatory for Equality is responsible for the organisation and appointing the honouree.
This measure is especially relevant as it is the first time that the UAB celebrates the 8th of March on an institutional level, and it is one of the essential actions of the axis of visibility and awareness. In the first editions, a part of the event's content was focused on the presentation of data describing the situation of women at the UAB, at a time when most of the community considered that the university was a space free from inequalities and discrimination. There is the presentation of data that shows the existence of an unequal distribution of the tasks women and men carry out, which affects the three groups. This presentation also includes the explanation of the actions and measures that are being politically carried out by the University to correct this situation of inequality. The ceremony also includes the recognition event for a woman, entity or individual that has been honoured for contributions to the defence and fight for women's rights. For the first time, gender research developed in the UAB is rewarded, recognised and made visible.
The content of the event has been changing throughout the different editions, and according to the political lines of the different governing teams and the directors of the Observatory. In addition, the designs of the posters in commemoration of Women's International Day reflect the political lines of each moment. It is pointed out that, since 2013, and especially after 2016, the poster is not only a tool to announce an event, but also a means to raise awareness.
The editions that have been taking place since 2006, the posters and a brief description of their contents are included below.
