Federico Mayor Zaragoza was unable to attend the inaugural ceremony held on 21 September for health reasons, but he did record a video in which he gave his opening lecture, focused on the culture of peace and particularly on the role of women and knowledge in the "transition from force to words".

The UAB ranks 147 in this year's edition of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It is up 16 positions from last year's 163. The university improves its position in aspects such as citations, international outlook, and teaching.
Five members of the Spanish water polo team, who have just won silver in the World Championships, are students at the UAB and form part of the Tutoresport Programme: Anna and Clara Espar, Beatriz and Matilde Ortiz and Laura Ester.
