The specialisation course Introduction to Sanskrit: Classical and Buddhist. Advanced Syntax and Text Reading is a follow-up to the courses Introduction to Sanskrit: Classical and Buddhist and Introduction to Sanskrit: Classical and Buddhist. Advanced Concepts at the UAB.
Sanskrit is the most important classical language of Asia and the only classical language shared across the entire continent. Through Buddhism and Hinduism, the Sanskrit language and literature have permeated Asian cultures from Mongolia and Tibet to Sri Lanka, and from Afghanistan to Japan.
This course is designed for those who have completed Sanskrit I and II, or for students with a general knowledge of grammar and syntax. The course is intended as an in-depth study of the language through the reading of texts such as fables and passages from canonical Buddhist literature, as well as texts from the great Indian epics.
In previous courses, most of the texts used for learning were adaptations or simplified versions of the original texts. In this third term of Sanskrit, students will be able to begin reading original texts. Knowledge of the Devanagari script is not compulsory, but is recommended. Students who do not have any knowledge of the script (having come from other universities or colleges) will be provided with materials for studying the Devanagari script.
