In the last 50 years, advances in the diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart diseases have been spectacular, particularly with regard to paediatric and neonatal care, with mortality rates dropping from over 25% to currently below 5%.
These advances are put forward as a paradigm of what can be achieved in medicine and surgery by designing imaginative and multidisciplinary strategies, and they have created a new population of adults with congenital heart disease whose cardiac anatomy and physiology is tremendously complex and, until now, little-known by most cardiologists who have never come into close contact with this area.
This is a professionally-oriented master's degree in which students, who can come either from paediatrics or cardiology, will receive theoretical and, above all, practical, personalised training in all the new concepts, topics and skills needed to work in the typical care scenarios of a Cardiology of Congenital Heart Diseases Unit: fetal, paediatric and adult, with each student focusing in particular on the scenarios related to his/her previous training and background.
- Cardiology Units specialising in exclusive care of congenital heart diseases, at level III and at all ages.
- Level III Adult Congenital Heart Disease Units.
- General Cardiology Centres seeking the added value of level I or level II care of adult congenital heart disease.
- General Cardiology Centres whose mission, in addition to the care of adult congenital heart diseases, involves giving advice to Paediatric Units on congenital heart diseases and on paediatric-age acquired and functional pathology.
For students with a background in paediatrics (paediatrics profile):
- Cardiology Units specialising in exclusive care of congenital heart diseases, at level III and at all ages.
- General Paediatric Centres with level III Paediatric Cardiology units.
- General Paediatric Centres seeking the added value of level I or level II care of paediatric congenital heart disease.
