University Master's Degree in Biological and Environmental Engineering

Training of professionals and researchers that integrate chemical engineering concepts in the fields of industrial biotechnology and environmental engineering

Admission Official Master's Degree in Biological and Environmental Engineering

Access

Access to this master's degree is open to holders of an official bachelor's degree from a Spanish university or from another higher education institution within or outside the European Higher Education Area, provided this gives access to postgraduate studies in the country of issue.

Admission requirements

The admission profile of the student par excellence is that of a graduate in Chemical Engineering or in other related fields of engineering (industrial engineering, chemical specialisation; environmental engineering) with a critical mind, concerned by sustainable development, with motivation for biotechnology, capable of working in international multidisciplinary teams, with a capacity for abstract thinking and logical reasoning, with a highly developed practicality and with the capacity for creation and innovation and skills for working in a research laboratory or in professional environments.

The student’s admission profile shall also require substantial knowledge of chemical engineering and basic knowledge of biotechnology and environmental engineering, as well as proficiency in English (level B2).

Selection criteria

If the number of applicants exceeds the number of places available, places will be awarded in accordance with the following criteria:

  • The academic record of the bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) (40%)
  • Multidisciplinary training in addition to the degree (courses, master’s degrees, knowledge of languages) closely related to environmental or biological engineering (20%)
  • Professional or research experience prior to taking the master’s degree in a sector related to environmental or biological engineering in a relevant position of the company: management, administration, research or design (10%)
  • Letter of recommendation from a lecturer at the university of origin and/or from the current employer of the student on their suitability as regards the student profile sought (10%)
  • Interview with the admission committee (20%)

Complementary training

Admission to the master’s degree is open to graduates in the field of environmental science and biotechnology, as well as other scientific profiles related to biology, physics or chemistry. Compulsory training supplements have been established for these profiles (up to a maximum of 18 ECTS credits). They are taught on the Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering and will bring onto the same level the knowledge of all the students from these areas or related engineering fields who gain admission to the master’s degree. These compulsory training supplements (see following table) shall be established in accordance with the subjects taken by the student during their bachelor’s degree or because the coordinator of the master’s degree considers this to be appropriate in line with the knowledge demonstrated by the student.

1. Transport Phenomena (6)
2. Heat Transmission and Thermotechnics (9)
3. Simulation of Chemical Processes (6)
4. Fluid Dynamics (9)
5. Control, Instrumentation and Automatism (6)
6. Environmental Technology (6)
