Basic skills

  • Students must have and understand knowledge of an area of study built on the basis of general secondary education, and while it relies on some advanced textbooks it also includes some aspects coming from the forefront of its field of study.
  • Students must be capable of applying their knowledge to their work or vocation in a professional way and they should have building arguments and problem resolution skills within their area of study.
  • Students must be capable of collecting and interpreting relevant data (usually within their area of study) in order to make statements that reflect social, scientific or ethic relevant issues.
  • Students must be capable of communicating information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialised and non-specialised audiences.
  • Students must develop the necessary learning skills to undertake further training with a high degree of autonomy.

Specific skills

  • Demonstrate generic knowledge of animals, their behaviour and the bases of their identification.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the structure and functions of healthy animals.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the aspects of organisation, finance and management in all fields of the veterinary profession.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the physical, chemical and molecular bases of the main processes in the animal organism.

  • Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and differentiation of the main biological agents of veterinary interest.

  • Perform basic analytical techniques and interpret the clinical, biological and chemical results, and interpret the results of tests generated by other laboratories.
  • Diagnose the most common diseases using different general and instrumental techniques.
  • Have basic knowledge of the profession, and in particular of the organisation and functions of professional practice.
  • Perform the most common medical and surgical treatments of animals.
  • Properly apply the principles of sterilisation of surgical equipment and the principles of surgical asepsis.
  • Safely perform sedations and regional and general anaesthesia, and evaluate and control the pain.
  • Prescribe and dispense medicines correctly and responsibly in accordance with legislation, and ensure that the medicines and waste are stored and eliminated properly.
  • Attend to emergencies and perform first aid in veterinary science.
  • Apply the basic cures that guarantee the correct function of the reproduction cycle and the resolution of obstetric problems.
  • Recognise when euthanasia is necessary and perform it humanely by employing the appropriate method.
  • Perform a necropsy, including a record of the injuries found, sample taking and storage and posterior transport.
  • Identify, control and eradicate animal diseases, with special emphasis on zoonoses and notifiable disease
  • Assess and undertake epidemiological studies and therapeutic and preventive programs in accordance with the standards of animal welfare, animal health and public health.
  • Value and interpret the production and health parameters of one animal group, considering the economic and welfare aspects.
  • Handle the correct protocols and technologies used to modify and optimise different animal production systems.
  • Perform ante mortem and post mortem inspection of livestock and properly identify the problems that affect the quality and safety of products of animal origin destined for human consumption.
  • Perform sanitary control of different types of catering and food companies and establishments, and implant and supervise quality management systems.
  • Perform risk analyses, including those of environmental and biosafety, and evaluate and manage them.
  • Apply food technology to the preparation of food for human consumption.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the history and evolution of veterinary science through its professional activities.
  • Demonstrate in depth knowledge of any specific aspect of any one of the fields of veterinary science. Integrate knowledge, skills and attitudes gained from the degree course in the professional setting of any of the many veterinary fields
