Internships

This programme includes a compulsory work placement of ten ECTS, carried out at partner companies (listed in point 1.16). Of these ten ECTS, four are for the students' physical presence at the host organisation's premises (100 hours) and six relate to the preparation of the placement report, including tutorials and assessment (150 hours).
- These 150 hours include the following.
a) The placement tutorial with the coordinator of the graduate diploma (the coordinator will guide students in their choice of host for the placement).
b) The student's introductory interview at the placement host organisation, with the new tutor and sometimes with the human resources officer or head of the unit in which the placement will take place, usually followed by a guided tour of the premises.
c) Preparation for the placement: familiarisation with the tools used in the organisation, such as style books and other language guides, and specific software.
d) Monitoring of the placement, through periodic interviews between student and diploma coordinator to review progress on the placement.
e) Work done by the student at home or at another place away from the placement location, which is often necessary when deadlines must be met and the student cannot finish a task in the normal placement timetable.
In fact these kinds of situations are actively encouraged by the coordinator in order to make the placement more realistic: the real world of professional language correction and support usually involves a combination of work done on-site and at home.

- The preparation of the placement report has the following stages.
a) Initial information search and documentation, which can be a relatively laborious process.
b) Writing the report, in accordance with a set of detailed guidelines. During this period the student may request tutorials with the diploma coordinator and/or the placement tutor.
c) Assessment, which, unlike exams, is discussed between the coordinator and the student.
Should the assessment process reveal deficiencies in the report, two further stages are envisaged, in which the report is (d) modified by the student and (e) discussed for a second time with the coordinator.

- All host companies assign a tutor to the placement student to ensure that the objectives of the placement are met. This tutor liaises with the diploma tutor, in particular when evaluating the competences acquired by students, which is always done through a questionnaire written by the diploma coordinator. Placements may vary from institution to institution, but they are always realistic, tutored and done on-site. "Realistic" means that students are brought into the normal work routine of the company, possibly after some initial training. "Tutored" means that the supervisor for the (real) tasks carried out by students is always the tutor, who is in charge of all aspects of the placement process, from allocation of tasks to assessment of results. "On-site" means that at least 90% of the placement hours must be worked on the company premises, in direct contact with the placement tutor.
