When we face a mathematical problem and want to advance in our understanding, we reach a key point: How do we know if a result is true? To ensure this, we need to prove it.
The main objective of this course is to provide a wide range of useful, interesting and applicable examples in the classroom in order to understand and consolidate what it means to make a proof in mathematics.
With this objective in mind, we will review different methods of proof, such as:
logical reasoning, induction and proofs based on calculations. We will also introduce
other methods that do not quite fit into any of the three previous categories:
Fermat's method of infinite descent, combinatorial proofs, proofs for invariance or parity, geometric proofs and proofs without words.
We will end by introducing mathematical conjectures and so-called false proofs as tools for motivation and promoting critical thinking.
-Induction
-Calculations
-Wordless proofs
-Other methods of proof
-Conjectures
-False proofs
