The micro-module Introduction to Tibetan Language: Reading Classical Tibetan Buddhist Texts introduces the classical Tibetan language through the reading of selected Tibetan Buddhist texts, combining presentations on Tibetan script and grammar with the analysis of key Tibetan Buddhist concepts.
An overview of the origins of the Tibetan language and script is given, and the capital script (dbu can) and phonetics of the syllabic alphabet are studied in depth, along with basic elements of grammar, Buddhist vocabulary and the Wylie transliteration system; examples of classical texts are used to expound fundamental concepts of Tibetan Buddhism, helping students to better understand the context of the study materials, thus offering a comprehensive introduction to the classical Tibetan language that combines linguistic learning with analysis of key ideas of Tibetan Buddhism.

Career opportunities
Students who complete the training in Classical Tibetan will be able to engage in teaching and academic research in Asian studies, as well as in the translation and interpretation of Buddhist texts. They will also have the opportunity to provide cultural consultancy to Asian-related organisations and to collaborate with museums and archives in the management of Asian art and literature collections.In addition, they will be able to work in cultural management, promoting Tibetan culture through events and exhibitions.
