The European Commission defines hate speech as “the encouragement, promotion or incitement, in any form, of hatred, humiliation or contempt of a person or group of people, as well as the harassment, discrediting, dissemination of negative stereotypes, stigmatization or threat towards that person or group of people and the justification of such manifestations on grounds of race, colour, descent, national or ethnic origin, age, disability, language, religion or belief, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation and other personal characteristics or conditions.

This study follows the proposals of the Council of Europe, which has promoted several educational campaigns against hate speech, especially on social networks. Education can contribute to building counter-narratives to the hate speech, which means uncovering its contradictions, prejudices and stereotypes, while arguing for the defence of human rights, demonstrating the fallacies that justify hatred towards an individual or group and its stigmatization. In this study we will also discuss the polarization that some digital media foster and how to deal with controversy and conflict in the classroom, as a fundamental part of a democratic education.

The course is designed intensively for 4 afternoons in February and March, starting at 5:30 p.m.

This microcredential could be part of future specialization and postgraduate diplomas
if it were taken together with other microcredentials.
