In the current context, where democracy is being questioned by some extremist discourses and citizens are increasingly losing trust in institutions and their representativeness, it is more necessary than ever to deepen the formation of democratic culture.
In response to this emergency, the Council of Europe (2018-2024) asks all member countries to work in educational centers on what it has defined as Competences for Democratic Culture. These competences are divided into four blocks skills, values, attitudes, and critical knowledge with the aim of empowering future citizens to understand, respect, and defend cultural diversity, equality, and social justice.
To address all these issues, the simple transmission of content is not enough. It is necessary to enhance the dimensions that underpin the competences, through the formation of critical thinking, dialogue, peaceful conflict resolution, and active community participation.
This training aims to develop strategies specific to education for critical citizenship, with the intention of preparing students to live and actively participate in democratic societies. The proposal for Education in Competences for Democratic Culture is aimed at teachers of all educational stages.
The course is designed intensively over 4 afternoons in the months of October and November, starting at 5:00 p.m. This micro-credential could be part of future specialization and postgraduate diplomas if taken together with other micro-credentials.
