The course provides knowledge on the analysis and description of audiovisual documents, including film materials, video, and sound documents, in various contexts such as film archives, television and radio archives, and other types of repositories that manage audiovisual documentation. Participants will learn methodologies for information retrieval, the use of cataloguing rules and metadata standards, document classification, and evaluation and selection. They will also become familiar with the technological environment that allows for the automation of many processes through artificial intelligence tools.
Objectives:

Understand cataloguing and indexing standards for audiovisual documents.

Learn about the technologies used to automate analysis and description processes through AI.

Understand the conceptual models that structure audiovisual information.

Learn methodologies for analysing and segmenting audiovisual documents.

Identify different types of metadata and the standards associated with their management.

Apply classification and selection criteria for audiovisual collections.

The Description of Audiovisual Documents

Introduction to archival description and international cataloguing standards.

Description elements: definitions and characteristics.

Image analysis: relationship between image and sound, framing, shots, camera angles.

Hierarchical and conceptual relationship models: FRBR, RDF.

Indexing: Documentary Languages and Vocabularies

Methodology for indexing audiovisual documents.

Use of thesauri, subject heading lists, and keywords.

Introduction to SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organization System) vocabularies.

Metadata: Concept, Application, and Management

Definition and classification of metadata.

Markup languages and metadata standards: Dublin Core, PBCore, EBU Core, IPTC Video.

Classification, Evaluation, and Selection of Audiovisual Collections

Introduction to archival classification and case studies.

Criteria for evaluating and selecting audiovisual documents.

Application of Technology in Document Processing

Artificial Intelligence technologies applied to audiovisual documentation.

Coexistence of automation and manual work in workflows.

The new role of the audiovisual documentalist in an automated environment.
