Specific skills

Specialty in Genetic Counseling:

- Evaluate the clinical and family history of a patient, as well as the results of previous genetic studies, to determine possible inheritance patterns and identify at-risk relatives.
- Assess and calculate the risk of occurrence and recurrence of a disease based on family history and tests performed, with the aim of providing accurate information to the individual or other family members who may suffer from or transmit a genetic disease.
- Acquire advanced communication skills that allow conveying complex concepts accurately and clearly to the patient and their family.
- Achieve the ability to assess the psychosocial situation of the recipient, considering emotional, ethical, social, and cultural aspects surrounding the diagnosis of a genetic disease and understand how these factors affect the reception of information to adapt its transmission.
- Become aware of one's own value judgments and beliefs to reduce their influence on the counseling process and be able to provide emotional support and non-directive genetic counseling, allowing the recipient to make their own informed decisions.
- Develop the ability to review one's own work, individually and supervised by others, to identify areas for improvement and act with the utmost rigor possible.
- Evaluate the genetic tests available for the molecular diagnosis of a genetic disease (sensitivity, specificity) and know the indications of each.
- Identify, know, and provide the patient or family with resources to adapt to the new situation after the diagnosis of a disease and provide long-term medical, educational, emotional, and social support.
- Acquire the skills and scientific method necessary to carry out scientific research projects in the field of genetics.¿

Specialty in Clinical Genetics:

- Perform and evaluate the clinical and family history of a patient, knowing how to interpret and give value to the most relevant data.
- Interpret a pedigree and calculate the risk of occurrence and recurrence of a genetic disease to inform the patient and their relatives of this risk and the possibility of genetic study.
- Be able to perform a comprehensive approach to the patient, allowing for clinical diagnosis
considering previous examinations, both genetic studies already performed and other complementary examinations.
- Acquire the ability to perform a complete, rigorous, and orderly dysmorphological examination of the patient.
- Use available diagnostic databases to perform a differential diagnosis.
- Understand the different molecular techniques available and their benefits and limitations, to apply the most appropriate diagnostic test for each patient.
- Establish a follow-up and clinical management plan appropriate to the patient and coordinate multidisciplinary follow-up when necessary.
- Acquire communication skills that allow conveying complex concepts accurately and clearly to the patient and their family.
- Develop the skills and scientific method necessary to carry out scientific research projects in the field of genetics.
- Specialty in Genetics Laboratory:
- Understand the functioning and scientific basis of the different genetic diagnostic techniques and the tools necessary for their development.
- Organize and manage an assistive genetics laboratory, including knowledge of the different quality standards specific to the area.
- Evaluate the genetic tests available for the molecular diagnosis of a disease (sensitivity, specificity) and know the indications of each.
- Acquire a comprehensive view of genetic diagnosis to interpret the results considering their limitations.
- Interpret the available clinical information and family history to apply the best analysis
strategy and contribute to the interpretation of identified variants.
- Develop basic bioinformatics knowledge to understand the process of analyzing omics-type tests to adapt the analysis strategy to each specific case.
- Classify detecte
