The European Master in Demography is a training program for the initiation to the academic study of human populations. The teachers come from the main European Research Institutes in Demography as well as Universities located in Austria, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. Together they created the European Doctoral School of Demography whose main task is the organization of this program.
The curriculum content is broad, balancing both demographic culture and methodology. Some background in mathematics, statistics and computing is required. The curriculum is divided into three parts, five core courses, a research seminar and the preparation by each student of a Master thesis. The five core courses are given in the period from mid-October to the end of June. These courses focus on causes and consequences of demographic change, population data, statistical and mathematical demography, as well as modelling, simulation and forecasting. The research seminar runs together with the core courses from mid-October to the end of June. All courses are held in English.

Specific skills
The general skills the students will acquire with the programme are:
- Be able to develop knowledge and critical understanding of key areas within the fields of demography.
- Being able to understand and apply relevant models and theories in analysing theoretical as well as empirical challenges.
- Get a solid understanding of how to use different research methods, including techniques of data collection and analysis.
- Function appropriately in demographic research but also in decision-making in private or public sector institutions.
- Develop the skills that are required by academic researchers in demography. The breadth of theoretical and practical experiences at EDSD enables students to address questions ranging from time-to-event data (survival analysis) to stochastic forecasting, from family dynamics to late survival, or from biodemography to public policy.
Transferable skills
More specifically, the program aspires to allow the student:
- Communicate well through written reports as well as through oral communication.
- Apply an academic approach to problem solving, including the use of relevant literature as well as high-quality data.
- Work efficiently in groups consisting of individuals from different backgrounds.
- Cope with a high workload through efficient time management and by prioritising learning and research activities.
