Students with an excellent MA degree or its equivalent are eligible to apply for a fellowship to the European Master in Demography EDSD program.
Students seeking admission to EDSD should have an adequate command of English. All applicants who are neither native English speaker nor have earned a degree at a University in which the language of instruction was English are urgently requested to submit certification of their English proficiency. We accept TOEFL (www.ets.org/toefl) or CAE test scores. The minimum TOEFL score required is 600 on the paper-based or 250 on the computer-based test. If you cannot provide certification of your English proficiency you should include a few sentences in your Statement of Purpose explaining why you think your English is good enough.
Access requirements
Students with a grade of Excel·lent or 'A' at MA level or equivalent can apply for a place on the European Master in Demography of the EDSD.
Students admitted to the EDSD must have an adequate level of English. All applicants who are not native English speakers and who have not obtained any university qualifications where the language of instruction is English must present a certificate of their level of English. Acceptable certificates are TOEFL (www.ets.org/toefl) or CAE. The TOEFL score must be at least 600 for writing or 250 in the computer test. Applicants who cannot provide certification of their level of English must explain in their letter of motivation why they think their English is of an adequate standard.
Selection criteria
EDSD accepts up to 20 students per year. Applications are examined by an Admission Committee that consists of the Dean of the School and 2 to 3 other members of the Scientific Board. Decisions about admission at the EDSD are made by this committee by majority vote. The Admission Committee takes into consideration the ability of potential students to successfully complete the high-level courses offered by EDSD.
A student's application to EDSD includes a curriculum vitae, a letter of recommendation, a statement of purpose, transcripts of certificates (Master or diploma), and proof of English language proficiency. All students must register in doctoral program of a European University.
The Admission Committee reviews all applications and in a first step makes decisions about eligibility. In a second step the eligible applicants are ranked according to their potential for success in the EDSD. In a third step the Dean discusses the ranking of the eligible applicants with the sponsors (INED, MPIDR, NIDI, CED, Universities) with the goal to obtain funding for the best candidates. As soon as funding is secured for an applicant, the person receives an admission letter with an invitation to study in the EDSD. A student is considered to be enrolled in the school as soon as s/he accepts the invitation.
