The course "Introduction to Classical Tibetan Language: Reading Texts from Tibetan Buddhism" introduces classical Tibetan through the reading of selected Tibetan Buddhist texts, combining presentations on Tibetan script and grammar with the analysis of key concepts in Tibetan Buddhism. It offers an overview of the origins of the Tibetan language and script, and provides an in-depth study of the capital script (dbu can) and the phonetics of the syllabic alphabet, along with basic elements of grammar, Buddhist vocabulary, and the Wylie transliteration system; examples from classical texts are used to present fundamental concepts of Tibetan Buddhism, helping students better understand the context of the study materials, thus offering a comprehensive introduction to classical Tibetan that combines language learning with the analysis of key ideas in Tibetan Buddhism.
